REFLECTIVE BLOG POST: week 4

The in-class activity we performed was to use AI to create these colorized images of the black-white old photo. I was very amazed of such a cool thing AI could do and made me even more interested to AI and technology. However, the activity also made me wonder “how did AI do that”? Is it accurate?

After reading the article, How AI is Hijacking Art History by Sonja Drimmer, I was able to realize that when looking at the colorised image it is esessential to consider the potential for misrepresentation. AI algorithms may not always accurately depict historical colors, leading to an altered perception of the past.

At their core, art historians study the ways in which art can offer insights into how people once saw the world. They explore how works of art shaped the worlds in which they were made and would go on to influence future generations. A computer algorithm cannot perform these functions.

As Drimmer claimed, computer algorithm could restore or recover lost works of art, but questions arise about the authenticity and original intent of the artist. They are simply using data and algorithms to logically recreate art when the only person that understands whats behind the art is the author or creater.

Another interesting quote I found in the reading was:

When AI gets attention for recovering lost works of art, it makes the technology sound a lot less scary than when it garners headlines for creating deep fakes that falsify politicians’ speech or for using facial recognition for authoritarian surveillance.

This quote was interesting to how although there could be consequences or conflicts when AI recover lost works of art, it is a much more positive use of AI. I believe that since AIs are capable of doing so many creative things we can’t, we should use it for positive and beneficial ways. Just like Drimmer mentioned, I hear a lot more new on the negative impacts AI brings such as the deep fakes or how they will take over humans.

  1. You brought up a really great point about how AI is great at recreating the past, but it might not be completely accurate. I think this is important to keep in mind when using AI to recreate old black and white images or in other ways because the results you get might not be entirely accurate.
