Midterm Exam Project:

For my midterm project, I delved into an analysis of artists, examining both their geographic distribution by location of birth and gender representation within the Tate Gallery’s collection. Here is the link!

  1. I really like this mapping visualization. I think it’s really cool that you were able to change the bubbles to have an M or an F to show male or female which I think added another cool dimension to your map. I also appreciate that you noted the gender disparity in different places in your writeup. The thing that stood out the most to me was the fact that so many of the artists are from Western Europe and the US and so few from other places around the world. I think this is a problem that many museums have but your map just made that really stand out to me.

  2. Hi Kenton, I really like the map you made. I also used the dataset but made a slightly different map with timeline. I love the idea that you use different bubbles for males and females, which makes it really easy to compare the two groups. Also, the pop-ups are very useful and provides more information about the artist. I also agree with your discussion about how DH, geography, and art history can interact with each other to provide more interesting insights.
