I used Fusion360 to model my Amazon kindle. The initial process of creating the body and screen of the kindle was not particularly challenging. By the time I got to making the power button and charging port on the bottom I felt comfortable with the program. However, I struggled with creating the text on the kindle, specifically with engraving the text onto the surface. The process of adding text was not all that hard, the only part I struggled with was getting the text positioned in the correct place. When it came time to engraving the text I stumbled upon a boolean error. After lots of research I figured out that I had to explode the text while it was still in the sketch. After exploding the text I could more closely see the lines that overlapped, I used the trim tool to delete all of the overlapping lines. I was left with enclosed letters that did not have any overlapping lines. Only after that was done was I able to engrave the text onto the surface of the kindle. I had to compromise on the back of the Kindle, it is not a smooth flat back, as I was not able to add curve that is at the base. This tool is extremely useful and very exciting to learn. I imagine it can be used in future projects to utilize 3D printing or other 3D modeling needs. A tip I have for future novice Fusion360 modelers is to use Google and other resources to their full extent, the interface is not self explanatory.

  1. I really appreciated the tip that you had, I agree that if I had used a tutorial online I could have learned more different tools and probably been much more efficient in creating my model. Also I thought it was really cool that you were able to include the text to the front and back of the kindle as that makes it really clear what you were trying to model.

  2. I think you did a very nice job with this 3d model. I can see that it is an Amazon Kindle. I like how you were able to include the words and the arrow. I looks very precisely done. I also like the detail of the screen and the buttons. I like your tip as well and agree with you about the future uses of Fusion360. I also agree with Marc and you that having a tutorial is very useful as the interface is not self-explanatory.

  3. I like your design, especially the engraved text which really makes it look natural. My design includes a text/logo too, but I just superimposed a image of it to the body. I would definitely like to try out engraving it next time. I also agree that it is helpful to search for tutorials and solutions on Google. It saved me a lot of time when I was bogged done and boosted my confidence as I know that lots of people, not just me, were facing problems and there is a way out.

  4. I really like the way that you got the text onto the Kindle, especially the design of the Amazon logo, as I think it helps to make it a lot more clear what it is. I can also tell that a lot of detail went into the shape with each of the rounded corners, and it adds a lot of style and elegance to the design. I was also having trouble separating components, so I will definitely look into the explode tool in the future!
