Reflections

For my Airpods Case model, I think it was a relatively easy project. It only consists of one shape, a rectangular prism which is then filleted to create the curved shape. It was a bit difficult to get all of the details on it, but I mostly included everything I wanted to.

For me, the hardest part was learning the Fusion software. I had no previous experience with it, and just finding where everything was located was not easy, and I’m still not super confident with it. Also moving the image around is somewhat difficult, switching between panning, orbiting, and selecting. I didn’t have too many difficulties with the actual modeling, besides using a decent amount of time to make sure most of the elements were accurate to real life.

I had to compromise a bit in the details of the case. I could spend a long time trying to get every little dot to be the perfect size, but in the end it looks relatively close to the real thing. My colors were also not completely accurate. I also had to compromise by not including a lid to the case. I don’t know how to do that in Fusion and I think it would be a bit out of the scope of this project to include a back joint with an opening lid.

I think Fusion could be a useful tool for modeling human-made structures. Whether it be modeling ancient ruins to show what they would have looked like when they were built, or modern buildings to store in a large database, both would be very achievable with Fusion.

One tip I have for novice Fusion users is don’t get too caught up in the details. When you’re first starting a project, it won’t need to be perfect, and not being detail-oriented helps you make a lot of progress right away. I wish I had known this for my first project, but I will definitely focus more on the broad ideas right away in future projects.

  1. This model is very cool, Nate! I especially liked the use of detail in the spacing of the holes on the bottom of the case. That being said, I can understand why you recommended that new users try to avoid getting bogged down in the details. What was your process like in terms of scaling the model to your AirPods case in real life? Did you try to give the model the same dimensions?

  2. Hi Nate, I really like your Airpods case model from all angles! The filleted and smoothly curved corners are especially well done. Although you said this model was relatively easy to make, I can see how much effort you put into trying to scale every single detail to the right size. I think it’s an important yet easily forgotten point (when we get too immersed in modeling everything perfectly) that a “model,” by definition, cannot be a 100% perfect reflection of what the physical object actually looks like.
