This assignment was easier than I expected, but I still struggled with it a lot. I was pretty nervous starting my model since I can be a bit technologically challenged. It ended up going pretty well, all things considered.
I specifically struggled with designing the handle of my mug. It was extremely hard for me to figure out how to have a solid shape protruding from the mug. I ended up having to make a line and then extrude it on all sides to make it 3D.
After spending far too much time working on the handle of my mug, I ended up needing to compromise on its size and positioning. The handle was a bit too big, but I could not figure out how to shrink the handle or how to move it around after I had joined it with the cup part of the mug. I tried for a while but I was never able to perfect the positioning or size and had to settle for a wonky handle.
I could see Fusion360 being a very interesting tool in the creation of digital exhibits showing artifacts and other material items. This would allow the viewer to analyze the object up close without the risk of damaging the item. It is possible that the Fusion360 software is not sophisticated enough for these tasks, but I am sure experts can make items look a lot more realistic than I could with this mug.
A tip I have for people that are new to Fusion360 is that there is a section under the “CREATE” dropdown menu that has options for “Box”, “Sphere”, “Cylinder” and others. This would have been helpful to have seen before I made the cup part of my mug from scratch.
If you want to check out my 3D mug, you can play around with the interactive model here!
Anya! I appreciate the choices you have made in stylistic detailing like curving the top of the mug more than the bottom for stability. While you think your handle might be wonky, I think functionally, its sleekness would allow more room for the fingers to grip the mug more comfortably! I am also excited by your idea of creating digital exhibits using this tool and think it is such a good project idea for us to consider in the future. I can imagine everyone in the class make an object surrounding a common theme like ‘the living room’ and then creating a big composition and placing all our created objects in one big digital living room. Of course, this is not the most profound example, but it could be fun!
