Foreign-Born Population 1850-2020: Analyzing DH Projects

Introduction:

At all points in its history, a significant proportion of the population of the united states had been born in other countries and regions.

This being the case, American history can never be understood by just looking within its borders. The culture and politics of the US have always been profoundly shaped by the material and emotional ties many of its residents have had to the places where they were born.

This map will allow us to begin to explore those connections at the basic level of demographic statistics.

  1. I think that this project is super exciting and relevant and I’m very glad that you covered it. I definitely agree that so much of American politics and history is shaped by the existing identities of immigrants before they came to America. I think that this project is an interesting way to look at the demographics of the US. I do think that the website would do better if you could select time periods to look at instead of just one massive time block or maybe just specific censuses.

    1. Hey Jamal, thanks for the kind words! I appreciate your understanding regarding the limitation of selecting a specific time frame. It’s true that it would require a lot of data space to keep track of every immigrant. However, I am glad that we can still change between a time frame of every 10 years, just like the census. It’s still a helpful way to analyze immigration trends over time.
