Week 2 Reflective Blog: Defining DH

In the late 1990s, projects began to appear that harnessed the digital to create visualizations, geospatial representations, simulated spaces, and network analyses of complex systems.

Burdick et al. “One: Humanities to Digital Humanities,” in Digital_Humanities (Cambridge, MA: MIT Press, 2012),9.

This passage stood out to me because it captures the crucial moment when digital scholarship started utilizing technology for visualizations and analyses, providing a clear focus for the reader on the evolution of digital humanities. In the reading it was also mentioned how graphical user interface introduced new possibilities, leading to the migration of games, entertainment, and immersive virtual environments online. Before this development, digital content was primarily text-based and lacked the visual richness associated with modern interfaces. The development of GUI leads to seamless integration of visually engaging elements, leading to a surge in the online presence of interactive and visually immersive experiences.

These developments seem very cool to me and something I would like to explore more about as I spend a lot of time with these entertainments. As I enrolled in Carleton hoping to learn about computer science and coding, I have not been able to decide what specific role or interest to pursue by studying them. However, reading this passage I feel like gave me a better idea of what I want to study and possibly make my future career. Although I didn’t bring any knowledge or experience that may come in handy when exploring more about DH’s visualization and GUI, my interest and love for the entertainment that uses these technologies was what shaped my idea and what I saw in this passage.

Under the large umbrella of Digital (Arts &) Humanities, I am most excited to learn about digitization (2D & 3D), artificial intelligence and machine learning, software development, games study, and virtual and augmented reality creation. I am interested in digitization (2D & 3D) since we are learning a lot about digitization currently and so far I have been enjoying it. Learning more about them seems quite appealing to me. AI and machine learning stand out to me as AI technology is becoming more and more common worldwide. I recently took a class that explored a lot about what role AI plays and now I want to learn more about the technical side of AI such as the development of them. Lastly, I am interested in learning more about games studies which leads to software development and virtual and augmented reality study. As these two technologies are key for the creation of games I want to learn more about them and even pursue them as a future job. However, regardless of whether I wrote it here, I am interested in exploring more as I seek to learn more about the amazing technology and development of science.
