Lab Assignment 5, Web Mapping

This week, in class we learned how to use ArcGIS to create maps. For this lab assignment we created out own personal spreadsheet with five places that we personally visit on campus a lot. My spreadsheet is linked here. My map that I have created is linked here.

While creating this map, I thought a lot about choosing a base-map that wasn’t too distracting to look at. I then chose the symbol of a plus sign for my 5 locations on campus because I liked the way they looked. When I was thinking about which locations to choose it made me realize how many places on campus I like to spend time and study at. I ended up narrowing it down to my dorm, the dining hall, the two places I have class at the moment, and the recreation center. I think it’s so interesting to think that even though the campus feels small, it is much bigger than I think.

I think that web mapping for DH work in general has a lot of potential. From the basic features that we used in class and this project, I already saw a lot of potential in which this is greatly helpful for DH work. I’m curious to see how much more useful this tool can be when more complicated features are applied for ArcGIS. The capabilities of this program are endless in the sense that anything can be mapped, especially if you know the location and coordinates. Even doing basic things using ArcGIS showed immense accuracy and I was able to zoom in and out of things with no problem. Overall, I had a great time discovering new features in ArcGIS and would love to experiment more with this in the future!

  1. I really like the base-map you chose, I think it does a good job of highlighting the buildings and not being too distracting to look at. It was definitely hard to narrow down the buildings to only five, but it seems the ones that you chose are representative of your life at Carleton.
