Lab Assignment Week 5:

My Webapp

For this project, I decided to choose the 5 most common places I visit on campus for my csv file. I chose the CMC because I have the majority of my classes here since I am a math major. The Gould Library is my study space, Severance Hall is my dorm, Burton Hall is where I eat the majority of my meals, and Cowling Gymnasium is where my tennis practices are held in the winter. I thought that overall, my decisions were pretty well made. I chose a streets basemap, so it was easy to see the street names and the street layer of Northfield. My labels are clear, and my symbology is a light bulb, a symbol for ideas and learning, which represents Carleton pretty well. I think that the potential of web mapping for DH work in general is huge. It has lots of potential to make the map more zoned in and focused for engagement. It allows you to incorporate multiple layers and make data more interactive and accessible. It is also much easier to visualize than just a csv file and easier to engagement rather than a giant paper map.

ArcGIS Online was very useful, as it was very user-friendly, although it took some time to get use to, and was able to easily integrate the data points to create an appealing and interactive map. You are also able to share the map easily to the general public and organizations for research. I liked how simple it was to add layers, symbols, lines, and labels. It makes storytelling very simple for web mapping.

  1. I agree that creating interactive maps from a set of data points is simple after you get the hang of ArcGIS Online. DH projects can push forward with making storytelling more interesting with web maps. Data visualization establishes a more significant impression in the students’ and the general public’s minds. I like your symbol of a lightbulb!
