Web Mapping Using ArcGIS – Feraidon

Creating a map of my most visited places on campus using ArcGIS was a really interesting task. It was a lot of fun and I learned a lot about the software in the process.

I manually added data about my movements into a CSV file and imported it into ArcGIS. This was a pretty straightforward process and didn’t take too long to complete as we had a template provided by the prof.

ArcGIS has a lot of different tools and features that you can use to customize your map and visualize your data. I really enjoyed experimenting with different basemaps and adding markers and labels to my map to make it more interesting.

Although using ArcGIS was a bit challenging at first, I found that the more I played around with different features, the more comfortable I became with the software. If I had more time to explore the software, I think I could create even better maps.

Overall, I really enjoyed creating this map and I think it’s a great way to get to know ArcGIS better while also learning something about your own behavior and routines.

  1. This is a well-laid-out post. I relate to you when you mention that ArcGIS was challenging to learn at first but it seemed to get easier the more you used it. You have a relatively spread-out weekly route, but I couldn’t tell what the points mean since. You didn’t include a legend. Looking at your map, I wish I had chosen a different base map since your map gives more context to your daily route than mine because of the street view.

  2. Thank you for sharing your thoughts on my post. I completely agree with you that learning ArcGIS can be a bit challenging at first, but it becomes easier with practice. Regarding the map, I apologize for not including a legend to explain the points. I will make sure to include one next time. As for the base map, I am glad that my map provided you with more context than yours. Choosing the right base map can definitely make a difference in how well your map conveys information.

  3. I agree with you that ArcGIS was very interesting and fun! I also agree that the CSV file process was fairly easy to navigate, but ArcGIS was not super beginner-friendly. I like how your locations look illuminated and bold, as you are able to spot your locations very easily and far away. I also chose the same base map as you, I like how it has great detail about the streets.

    1. For beginners, ArcGIS can be quite complex, but there are many useful resources available to enhance the look of our maps once we get familiar with it.

  4. Great post! The web mapping looks great. Looks very organized and easy to navigate. I noticed two different colors were being used for the buildings and they seem to have different color hues which I think represents the number of days you go to those places. I also, agree that the majority of the things from this lab were easy except the ArcGIS and its complexity for a novice user.

    1. Thank you for the kind words, Hadi. Yes, the different hues on the buildings indeed gives us an idea of how many times I visit those buildings every week. Darker == More often, Less Darker == Less often. Another things that helps this map pop out is the neon colored buildings that we can implement from the effects category and the bloom option.
