Carleton Football Map

Members of the group: Sydney, Anya, Marc, Nate

Project topic: We want to create a map to show Carleton football’s game history, both in terms of travel and success. The final map will include all of the locations where Carleton football has traveled, and their wins and losses at that location along with the date starting from 1883. We are hoping to see if the conference has changed at all as well as Carleton’s track record against certain schools.

Sources: Carleton football’s home page, MIAC page, and data from Dave Pape.

Processes: Our data will be gathered in Google Sheets and presented in ArcGIS.

Presentation: The final presentation will be an interactive map created in ArcGIS where the user can click on points over schools that Carleton has traveled to. When they click on the point an information box will appear with all of the dates they played that school and if they won or lost.

Timeline: We have already gathered data thanks to Dave Pape, next we will map it and then run a statistical analysis on it. We are hoping to have the GIS portion of our project done by early 9th week.

This final project will be a good model for our project as it is an example of mapping important locations and providing information about them in an interactive way.

  1. I am interested in this topic as I want to learn more about what ArcGIS can show us. While I am not particularly interested in Football I am interested in learning how to map the team’s history.

  2. I think it is really cool to look back on the history of athletics at Carleton and so I am hoping we will be able to create a cool visual so that people can see how sports have evolved both at Carleton and in the midwest. I also really like sports and I am glad I get to incorporate that into the final project.

  3. I am excited to be able to use some of the new skills that we have learned this term, especially ArcGIS. I am also excited to learn more about where the football team has traveled and if there are any schools outside of Minnesota that they visit every year. I hope this project will help show other Carls the long history of Carleton football and give them a better understanding of the scope of Carleton athletics.

  4. This is a really cool project! I think that using ArcGIS to build an interactive map will be a great way to approach this problem. I think that it is great that you have already gotten data from Dave Pape. I am excited to see your final product and how the Carleton football schedule has evolved over time.

  5. I’m excited for this project to enhance my mapping skills, and to specifically create a map with a bunch of data that changes over time. I’m interested to see how Carleton football has changed in the 100+ years it’s existed.
