Final Project Assignment: Project Update

  • Progress
    • What have you done so far, who have you talked to, what have you gathered, and what have you built?
    • Studio Art Professor David Lefkowitz – He was able to provide his “Nirthfolde’ map projects and ideas on who else I can come into contact with such as the Artists Guild and the Northfield Historical Society.
      • He also mentioned walking artist, visiting professor Phil Smith who worked with CAMS photographer John Schott, if it may be of interest to our project.
      • We talked about public vs private (institutional) art as we wanted to include both the Northfield and Carleton community of artists.
      • This led to the discussions of the public artwork that can be seen and if our art tour should be about artworks that you can visit and see. Such as Marie Key’s Food Co-op Mural and the sidewalk paintings, how it is a reflection of place
    • Art professor Jade Hoyer about her thoughts and she said we could contact the Northfield public library, Natlie Draper, and how they have an ongoing discussion about their painted steps of books. This would be a reflection of art and place as well as art for, and engaging, the broader community.
    • Conor McGrann was able to say he can contribute information and works documenting the Bur Oaks Project, lead by Eleanor Jenson,  which are the observational drawings of various bur oaks. This can represent time and change in general.
    • Also e-mailed David Bliss, chair of the art department for any comments or contributions but have not heard back quite yet, I assume as Boliou doesn’t have that much institutional  documentation/archival as Weitz does (going back to the discussion of private vs public art with Jade) that we don’t have a place interconnecting portfolios of students that we can access easily. Simply meaning we are going to have to search for our own data individually.
    • Even though we have only ~2 weeks left, we have scheduled a meeting with the Carleton Archives/librarians landing next Friday (March 1st) with Zoe Adler, Tom Lamb, and David Bliss.
    • Found works in the Perlman Museum Collection by Edmund T. Montgomery that’d be great for our project and added it to a spreadsheet.

  • Problems (and proposed solutions)
    • What issues have you run into? Finding a complete list of all the artworks that contain a building or location from Carleton or Northfield. We also tried to contact some of the professors in the art department for their input and any artwork that we could add to our project, but we were not able to gain much progress from this.
    • Have they forced you to change your initial plan? Yes, we initially planned on getting feedback from professors and staff who work in the art department who could give us some art or input for our project, but after contacting them we decided that it would be easier to find the art ourselves. In addition, we were hoping to be able to find the physical copies of art works, however, we realized that this would significantly limit our options and make it difficult for us to find the artwork so we changed our plan. It would be difficult to be sure that we included every depiction of each building on campus so we decided to expand our project to include any pieces of art that depicts Northfield as well.
    • Do you have a proposed solution or do you need help formulating one? One of the solutions we came up with is to simply stick to searching the artworks on our own using the Carleton Archives and Perlman Teaching Museum website.

  • Tools and techniques
    • What applications/languages/frameworks have you selected and how are you going to implement them? We will be using ArcGis online to map out the image of each art work and the locations on campus that they depict. More specifically, we will be using the feature story blocks on ArcGis which, when someone zooms into a map, storymaps will guide the zoom into the points that we set.

  • Deliverables
    • An updated timeline of deliverables
      • Week 9 – looking for artworks
      • Week 10 – combining artworks
    • Is your project still on track? Yes

Personal messages:

Each team member should add a brief message outlining your personal work on the project, referencing the roles decided in the team charter.

Janet – I emailed 3 professors, and 4 staff members, scheduled times,  and been in three meetings with said Carleton faculty to discuss the project idea and if they can contribute artworks of their own. Group scheduled time together to meet on the project, mainly about scope and time for project progress to submission. Also in reflection on “backup” projects would be recording student class routes compared to the transition time Carleton has or overlay Architecture of buildings on ArcGIS? In case we need to pivot for the sake of time.

Wesley- So far I have mainly been working on searching for pieces of art that we would be able to use in our project. I also worked on creating the team charter and the source documentation assignments that were due for our project. My initial role was to do the general data keeping and writing out the posts for this project, but in addition to that I will assist with the creation of the map role on ArcGIS Online when our group finishes collecting all of the artworks that we can use.

Sho- So far what I have done for the group would be to make the source documentation post for the group. While working on that, I was able to find pictures of the sculptures/buildings located on the campus which we decided to use for our project. I will for sure keep on finding more drawing and art works through the archives. Initially map role was to work on the ArcGIS Online which our group has not made it that far yet. Therefore, I am hoping to be able to contribute more when we get there and fulfill my role.

  1. I like your project idea of creating an interactive map showcasing artworks depicting Carleton College and Northfield locations. I think that you guys did a great job of reaching out and making conversation with faculty members like Professor Lefkowitz and McGrann for insights since they are very knowledgeable in this area. Good work in adapting and expanding on the type of artwork that are not physical copies as well, I think that the project will be much more manageable.
