BLOG POST ASSIGNMENT: TUTORIAL

Introduction

The tool I will be using is ArcGIS Online. You guys may already be very familiar and comfortable with ArcGIS Online, but I will introduce a technique we did not go over in class. This technique is customizing the pop-up of your points of the database in the map. While we may have gone over how to add the pop-up, we did not learn how to customize the title, content, and visuals. In this post, I hope to introduce you guys how to customize your pop-up so you guys can make your DH project more informative and creative. I believe that one of the key ideas of ArcGIS Online is to plot the dataset to visualize the data. However, while mapping out the data is key, the pop-up could present a variety of information and present more information to the user.

How to customize pop-up

Step 1: Create a layer for you map

Click Add which is the plus sign at the top left of the black sidebar
Then choose the option between:

  • Add Layer from Web lets you link directly to geographic layers hosted publicly online by putting in the URL to the layer
  • Add Layer from File lets you upload your geographic data which will be stored on the ArcGIS servers and count toward your data quota
  • etc

It is important to add a layer because, without this, we will not be able to customize the Pop-up. If you look at the image above, on the right sidebar menu, there will be the Pop-up option which we will be using to edit.

Step 2: Explore the different options we can change in the pop-up section

As you can see in the above image, you can change the title of all the different points pop-up on the map. If you take a look below the title section, is the fields section. In this section, we can change the field name and add a description for it. However, the key feature of this section is how you can control what attributes or values will show up on the pop-up. By clicking on the x next to the variables, you can hide it in the pop-up. By clicking and holding on the six dots in square form, you can drag them to change the order of the variables. If you want to re-add the field you deleted, you will have to click on the blue “Select field” button. After you click on it if you scroll down you will be able to see all the variables of your dataset. The ones with the check mark are the ones that are currently displayed so if there is a variable you want to show but without a check, you will have to click on it so it will be displayed.

Step 3: Click on + add content at the bottom

If you click on the add content button, you will be given the option to add a Field list, chart, image, and text. These are the highlights of the tool and technique I wanted to introduce in this post. While the normal pop-up with text and number may be informative enough. I believe that being able to add a chart or an image will greatly improve the quality of information you are displaying. It will also be further engaging for the user as adding them would visually stand out more.

Step 4: How to add a chart

After you click on the chart you will have the option to choose between bar, line, and pie chart as you can see in the image above. After you select the type of chart you would have to choose what variable to add to the chart. You can do that by clicking on the blue “select fields” and doing the same process as step 2.

Step 5: Adding image

If you click on the image, you will have a box to put the URL of the image you want to put. In my case, my dataset is on the Carleton College building so I attached a picture of Anderson Hall so the user can not only learn the location of Anderson Hall but see what it looks like too.

Step 6: Conclusion

Finally, you can save your map and the custom pop-up by going to the black sidebar at the left and clicking on Save As.

  1. I think this tutorial on customizing pop-ups with ArcGIS Online is incredibly insightful! Your instructions are super detailed and make it seem very manageable for new users. I like the step-by-step breakdown, especially highlighting the ability to add charts and images.
Thanks for sharing this valuable resource with us! Good job with listing links as well. My final project is on ArcGIS, so maybe I will be able to find your tutorial useful for my project.

  2. Great tutorial! I think this would be really useful for the next time I use arcgis since it allows more information and data to be presented to the users without over stuffing the screen. For the first arcgis assignment I was trying to figure out how to add images of the buildings on Carleton, so this tutorial would have been really useful when I was working on that.

  3. This tutorial is really useful. It took me a while to add pop-ups for my map assignment but I failed to customize the pop-up for each of the buildings. After reading your tutorial, I think it is because I did not add a new layer. It’s also helpful that you introduced how to add images and charts, which are also things that can help viewers to obtain information when exploring.
