render of salt shaker

Lab 1

I created a salt shaker. Having had some experience modeling in Blender I wanted to work on a shape that had some geometric complexities but was still rather manageable (nothing ergonomic or over-designed). I started with the basic shape which was supposed to have a hexagonal base but a circular top. I extruded the top and hollowed out the whole thing.

The biggest struggle that I came across is that I wanted to thread the inside of the cap with the same threading shape I used on the base. I was unable to figure out how to add the thread and soften it’s shape before it ruined the mesh by overlapping with itself. I’m sure this is possible, and I would know how to tackle this in blender, but this stumped me and I decided to make the thread visual-only. I think youtube will be a very powerful resource for becoming more familiar with this software.

used this as a reference when making base shape (connecting hexagon with circle)
used this to add holes to top.

  1. Great work on creating the salt shaker. You are definitely experienced and your choice of this geometrically complex shape tells that. It’s amazing that you take in account the perspectives and other details. I also like how you keep challenging yourself even though you could have just pick a easier shape. Youtube Tutorials are very useful.

  2. I love the creative decision of placing the cap next to the body of the shaker as opposed to on top of it, it emphasizes that you worked hard on developing both the parts. I enjoy the detailing in the ridges of the shaker and was drawn to the transparency and shading of your model. I think it’s really cool that you know how to work in Blender, I’ve been wanting to learn it for a while now! I think a lot of my digital design literacy is also thanks to Youtube so I agree with your tip.
