Members of the Group: Tonushree, Mai, and Clark
Project Topic:
Loosely relating to the arts/cultural/music scene on campus. Our current ideas are tracking KRLX activity through a week or the events that happen in the Weitz over a month and doing some network analysis of the performers/speakers/DJs. Still workshopping and open to more ideas! I think we choose an idea and see how far we can get with the research we do next week to see if we need something else.
Objectives:
- Create a network and map visualization of our found data
- Make connections and conclusions about Carleton’s larger artistic culture and events
Proposed Methodology:
Sources (What data do you hope to use and how do you hope to find it?):
Hopefully we can find publically available information (avalabile to Carleton students) to use. Otherwise the events we are tracking are also things that were likely documented by the Archives at Carleton and it wouldn’t be difficult to find out what information that they host. Also for information based on the Weitz information can be based on the Carleton Art’s Calendar where monthly art events are listed.
Processes (What analyses or transformations will you conduct on those data?):
Likely multiple versions of an excel sheet will be made to track different interactions we can find and the connections between our sources. These sheets will need to be edited in order to better allow our data to be interpreted by applications that allow us to transform our information into visuals. Mapping our data too could require us to draw up small maps of campus to better understand movements on campus (if we end up researching more down the path of events in the Weitz Center).
Presentation (How will you present the results and integrate the digital assets you create as an interactive final product?):
As we have much experience with in this class – a website will most likely be our best form of presenting our information.
Proposed Timeline:
Week 7: Finalize a topic
Week 8: Data collection and sorting
Week 9: Creating Visualizations
Week 10: Creating write-ups that make links for all the stories our data set pieces together during class of Tuesday + Developing our Website

Unique Interests in the Project:
Tonushree: I am a fan of the arts and a fan of designing. I was immediately taken by topics that involved visualizing data, either through graphs, network analysis or mapping. It feels like a more technical form of art-making. A project involving both was an idea that I naturally gravitated towards.
Clark: I really enjoyed learning about data visualization and mapping in the past few weeks and am excited to make a project that can use these tools to their full potential. I will also be interested in seeing some of the interesting connections that we can find through graphing our data.
Mai: I’m interested in learning more about cultural and music scenes at Weitz. Mapping and network analysis are great ways to visualize connections between students and their interests. I liked working on the lab assignment of the campus map and would like to explore other aspects of the tool.
